Nigerian woman gives birth at Sea minutes after being saved from drowning

Nigerian woman gives birth at sea

A woman believed to be a Nigerian  who attempted to cross the sea on a rickety dinghy with around 100 other migrants and refugees before it began to deflate.
She was rescued from the sinking dinghy by Italian coast guards and minutes later, she went into labour and gave birth to her baby as the the boat made its way to the island of Lampedusa.

Pictured above is the newly born in a blue blanket carried by a coast guard.
Both mother and baby are currently in a hospital and doing fine.
The woman is just another one of 300,000 refugees and migrants who have crossed the Mediterranean  into Europe this year, up from 219,000 in the whole of 2014.
